15+ Years of Specialist JLR, Classic, Performance & German Car Expertise

Specialist JLR Services | Classic Land Rover Restoration & Performance Tuning | German Car Specialist Essex

Not every garage understands what a classic Defender represents to its owner, or knows the difference between a 200Tdi and a 300Tdi rebuild. We do. Our team has been working on classic Land Rovers — Defender 90, 110 and 130, Discovery 1 and 2, and the Range Rover Classic — for over 15 years. From full chassis-up restorations to engine rebuilds on TD5, 200Tdi, 300Tdi, and the old 3.5 and 3.9 V8, we carry the skills and parts knowledge that most modern workshops simply do not have.

On the performance side, we offer ECU remapping, supercharger upgrades for the 5.0L V8, and suspension upgrades across the modern JLR range. Gains of 30–50bhp on the TDV6 and SDV6 are achievable with a safe, dyno-verified Stage 1 map — not an aggressive pop-and-bang tune that compromises reliability.

We are also one of the few independent specialists in Essex equipped to service BMW, Audi, and Mercedes alongside JLR vehicles. Familiar problems like the BMW N47 timing chain, Mercedes OM651 injector failure, and Audi 2.0 TFSI oil consumption are all handled in-house — one specialist, one workshop, no referrals.

15+ Years Classic Expertise

TD5, 300Tdi, 200Tdi and V8 engine rebuilds — original spec or upgraded.

Multi-Brand Workshop

JLR, BMW, Audi & Mercedes — one specialist, one location, no referrals.

Classic Land Rover Restoration

A classic Land Rover is not just a vehicle — it is a project that deserves to be handled by people who genuinely understand the platform. We have been rebuilding Defenders, early Discoverys, and Range Rover Classics for over 15 years. Whether you want a sympathetic mechanical restoration that keeps the character of the original, or a full chassis-up rebuild to modern reliability standards, we have the expertise and the patience to do it properly.

Engine families we work on routinely include the TD5, 200Tdi, 300Tdi, and the 3.5, 3.9, and 4.2 V8. We source genuine and pattern parts from established suppliers and can advise on upgrades — such as the 300Tdi conversion on an early Defender or a disc brake conversion on a Series vehicle — where reliability genuinely benefits.

Full Chassis-Up Restorations

Complete strip-down to a bare chassis, galvanising or outright chassis replacement, full bodywork repair or new panels, mechanical rebuild to your specification, and interior retrim. We manage the project from the first assessment through to final road test and sign-off. A properly restored Defender is an investment — we treat it accordingly.

Engine Rebuilds — Classic JLR

Full reconditioning of TD5, 200Tdi, 300Tdi, and 3.5, 3.9 and 4.2 V8 engines to OEM specification or upgraded tolerance. Strip, clean, crack test, machine, rebuild, and pressure test — the same process we apply to modern engines, using the correct heritage parts. We can work to original specification or incorporate specified upgrades where the owner requests improved reliability or performance.

Transmission & Drivetrain

Gearbox and transfer case rebuilds across the LT77, R380, and LT230 units. Axle overhauls on Salisbury and Rover axles. Differential rebuilds and ratio changes. Propshaft balancing and UJ replacement. We work to the correct shimming tolerances and use quality bearing sets — not fast-fit pattern parts — because drivetrain slop is impossible to ignore in a lightweight classic chassis.

Suspension & Brakes — Classic

Leaf spring and coil spring setups rebuilt or upgraded. Disc brake conversions on drum-braked Defenders and Series vehicles — a genuine safety improvement that we recommend on any vehicle seeing regular road use. Power steering conversions available for Defenders using the Adwest or Gemmer steering box and pump setup. All work quoted and specified in advance.

JLR Performance Tuning

Modern JLR engines — particularly the TDV6, SDV6, and Ingenium diesel — are conservatively mapped from the factory. A well-executed Stage 1 remap can deliver 30–50bhp and a meaningful torque increase without compromising reliability, providing you use a tuner who understands the platform. We do not offer generic map files or over-the-counter ECU flashes. Every remap is reviewed against your engine's specific calibration and verified on our rolling road before the vehicle leaves.

For the supercharged 5.0L AJ133 V8 — fitted to the Range Rover Sport SVR, Jaguar F-Type R, and Jaguar XJ — we carry out pulley upgrades, intercooler improvements, and bespoke mapping in conjunction with the mechanical work. These are not bolt-on power kits: they are engineered upgrades with the calibration adjusted to match.

ECU Remapping

Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuning for TDV6, SDV6, Ingenium diesel, AJ126 and AJ133 petrol engines. Improved throttle response, mid-range torque, and measurable fuel economy gains on typical driving cycles. All maps dyno-verified — no aggressive or unsafe calibrations.

Supercharger Upgrades

Smaller pulley fitment, improved intercooling, and bespoke mapping for the 5.0L supercharged V8. Suitable for the Range Rover Sport SVR, Jaguar F-Type R, and Jaguar XJ Supersport. All upgrades are carried out alongside a full cooling system check and mapped on the rolling road at completion.

Exhaust & Intake

High-flow induction kits, panel filter upgrades, and stainless steel exhaust systems. DPF removal is available for off-road and motorsport use only — see disclaimer below. All intake and exhaust work is mapped to suit the new airflow where applicable.

Suspension Upgrades

Lowering kits, uprated dampers, and polyurethane bush kits for modern JLR road cars. Air suspension recalibration for lowered ride heights on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. All suspension upgrades are set up on a four-wheel alignment rig at completion.

Performance tuning disclaimer: ECU remapping and performance modifications may affect your vehicle's manufacturer warranty and emissions compliance. DPF removal is for off-road and motorsport use only — a vehicle with the DPF removed is not legal for road use in the UK. Always inform your motor insurer before modifying your vehicle, as failure to do so may invalidate your cover. We will advise on the implications before any work is booked.

German Car Specialist — BMW, Audi & Mercedes

Our certified technicians have been trained across multiple brands — not just JLR. If you own a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes alongside your Land Rover, you can bring both vehicles to one workshop with confidence. We carry out the same high-standard diagnostic and repair work on German platforms that we apply to JLR: correct diagnostic tools, OEM-quality parts, and a written report before any work begins.

The faults listed below are among the most common we see on each brand. They are well understood by our team, and in many cases can be resolved for significantly less than a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes main dealer would quote.

Brand Common Services Example Prices
BMW N47 / N57 timing chain replacement, B47 / B57 servicing, DPF forced regeneration, transfer box repairs, cooling system overhaul Timing chain: £1,200 – £1,800 Book service →
Audi 2.0 TFSI oil consumption repair, DSG servicing and mechatronic, Quattro differential repair, turbocharger replacement, timing chain (EA888) Oil consumption fix: £1,500 – £2,500 Book service →
Mercedes OM651 injector failure, OM642 oil cooler seals, AdBlue system faults, ABC (Active Body Control) suspension, 7G-Tronic gearbox service Injector replacement: £400 – £600 each Book service →

Example prices are estimates for standard repairs on a typical vehicle in good condition. Final quote provided after diagnostic inspection. VAT not included in the above figures unless stated.

One Diagnostic System, Multiple Brands

We use multi-brand diagnostic platforms that read live data and stored codes across BMW, Audi, and Mercedes modules — not just generic OBD readers. The same depth of diagnosis we apply to JLR vehicles applies here.

OEM-Quality Parts — Confirmed by VIN

Parts for BMW, Audi, and Mercedes are sourced from the same tier-one OEM suppliers — Bosch, Mann, Mahle, Gates, Valeo — and confirmed against your vehicle's VIN before ordering. No unknown-origin pattern parts.

Independent Rates, Specialist Standard

BMW and Mercedes dealer labour rates regularly exceed £200 per hour in the UK. Our independent specialist rate delivers the same technical outcome for significantly less — without the overhead of a main dealer franchise structure.

Why Choose JLR Engine Specialists for Specialist Work?

Specialist work — whether it is a Defender chassis-up restoration, a V8 remap, or a BMW N47 timing chain — requires a level of knowledge, tooling, and patience that most general garages simply do not have. Here is what sets us apart.

  • 15+ years of classic Land Rover expertise. Not just modern JLR. We understand TD5 oil pressure issues, 300Tdi head gasket failure patterns, and V8 timing chain tensioner wear — from direct experience, not a manual.
  • ECU remapping by experienced tuners — dyno-verified. Safe, measured gains rather than aggressive calibrations. Every map is reviewed against your engine's specific build and tested before the vehicle leaves.
  • German car specialist — one stop for all brands. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes handled in the same workshop to the same standard. No referrals, no guesswork, no third-party delays.
  • Certified technicians across multiple brands. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes diagnostic and repair expertise alongside JLR — the same technicians, not outsourced to a sub-contractor.
  • 12-month warranty on all work. Parts and labour. Nationwide. Whether it is a classic engine rebuild or a modern ECU remap, our warranty applies where we carry out the work and supply the components.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most often about classic restoration, performance tuning, and German car specialist work.

Yes. Restoration is a specific discipline that goes significantly beyond mechanical repair — it involves project management, sourcing correct-specification components, chassis fabrication, bodywork, and finishing to a standard that reflects the vehicle's history and the owner's brief. We have been carrying out chassis-up Defender restorations for over 15 years. We can work to an original-specification rebuild or to a modernised specification with improved mechanical reliability — both approaches are quoted and agreed before a single bolt is undone.

Yes. The TDV6 (3.0L diesel) responds well to a Stage 1 remap. On the 245bhp variant, gains of 30–50bhp and 80–120Nm of torque are achievable from a well-executed Stage 1 calibration, along with noticeable improvement in throttle response and mid-range pull. We do not use generic off-the-shelf map files — every remap is reviewed against your vehicle's existing calibration and verified on our rolling road before handover. We will advise on the implications for your manufacturer warranty before any booking is confirmed.

Yes — the name reflects where our core expertise started, not a limit on what we work on. We service and repair BMW, Audi, and Mercedes vehicles using the same OEM-quality parts, multi-brand diagnostic tools, and certified technicians that we apply to JLR work. Many of our customers own both a Land Rover and a German car and want one trusted specialist for both — that is exactly what we offer. Specific examples of German car work we handle regularly include the BMW N47 timing chain, Mercedes OM651 injector failure, and Audi 2.0 TFSI oil consumption repair.

A rebuild typically refers to a specific component — usually the engine or gearbox — being stripped, inspected, machined where necessary, and reassembled to a serviceable standard. A restoration covers the entire vehicle: chassis, bodywork, mechanical systems, interior, and finish. A restoration project starts with an agreed specification and scope, involves sourcing period-correct or upgraded parts, and results in a vehicle that is rebuilt from the ground up rather than repaired. Restoration timelines, costs, and scope vary widely — we always start with a detailed written assessment and quote.

You are legally required to inform your motor insurer of any modification to your vehicle, including an ECU remap. Failure to do so may invalidate your cover. Most standard policies will accommodate a remap, though premiums may increase. On manufacturer warranty: if your vehicle is within its original JLR manufacturer warranty period, a remap may give the manufacturer grounds to reject warranty claims on affected components — typically the drivetrain. We discuss all implications clearly before any remap is booked, and we will not proceed without your confirmation that you understand and accept them.

Yes. We work with a network of specialist enclosed and flatbed transport providers who can collect non-running or non-drivable classic vehicles from anywhere in mainland UK. We can advise on the best transport method for your specific vehicle and coordinate the collection directly. Contact us with your vehicle's location and current condition and we will arrange a quote for collection alongside the restoration or repair work.
